If social media were a judge, the judge would be both schizophrenic and stupid. Fortunately, social media aren’t in that position… unless you’re crazy enough to let such a system judge you.
As I’ve said before when he visits this theme – deToqueville noted the dangers of the tyranny of the majority in any democracy — even without electronics.
The toon is a dig at social media for it’s venal influence and that it, social media, overacts in their judgements as the judge represents, i.e.,.. Guilty, Guilty, mob rule at its worse. He is not here critising the death penalty. He reminds that in the legal system due process is the check on tyranny/ mob rule. No man is an island unto himself, when the bell tolls, it tolls for thee..
I am thinking, all who testify against me, even because I don’t obey the law and they are testifying because that’s the law: traitors to their country (‘I’ am the country). All who oppose me, death penalty (for now death penalty, we can think of an excuse to justify it later). If I can not get away with it, make up something so they can get death penalty. If they are better than me, death penalty. If they judge me, I make the rules, so nothing. Time for my covfefe break
There was an episode on season 1 of The Orville where exactly this scenario was presented: a society in which everyone was judged, sentenced and condemned strictly by social media. It was a very well done episode that really pointed out the flaws of such constructs. One line in particular I liked regarding majority opinion: “I believe they have confused opinion and knowledge.” In my observation of history, the majority is seldom right. It’s also been observed by many that some of the most senseless comments on the planet can be found on Twitter and YouTube.

Is someone being mean to Pastis on Twitter? Did he, perhaps, get his feelings hurt?
Does he know that they have no actual power over him, and that he doesn’t even need to read it?
He seems to be really obsessed with “people being mean online” lately, to the detriment of characters and jokes and actually making any sense.
