This is exactly why I hate working on cars If you like to do it, God bless you. If it’s your job, you earn every penny you make, and then some.

I am surprised TJ’s back is not covered in oil, or it just because with the oil flowing down from his hair, he would never notice anything additional?

I feel like this strip is a recycle, like the one where Luann tried some coffee and spit it up. It was presented as her first time drinking it, but that same exact gag was used in a strip years ago.

Because if I change the oil myself, then I KNOW the drain plug will be put back in! Plus, I get the exact kind of oil I prefer to use in my vehicles, and bragging rights.

Looks like Greg is giving Pennzoil a plug.

    .

By the color of the car, it appears that it might be Brad’s old ’76 to ’79 “Disco” Nova. I do not know why he bothers to change the oil, that thing probably leaks and burns so much oil that when you have to add a half quart every other day, it basically continually has new oil in it.

    .

It is also one of the first hybrids with that 350 (5.7L) under the hood. It burns gas and it burns rubber…

I used to work on the car. Once I forgot to take off the old oil filter gasket and leaked a ton of oil. Then I stripped the screw in the distributor back plate and had to buy a new distributor. Then I just said EFF IT and started going to the mechanic, it was cheaper in the end.

The only work I’ve had done by a mechanic is replacing the rear axle bearings. I don’t have a bearing press. The front wheel bearings took me hours, but I did them. Oil changes are a snap.

Nice to see Brad and TJ in a Sunday foible. Also like seeing he is working on a car with a carburetor. Same muscle car that he had before? If TJ’s passion was the focus we’d be in the kitchen though.

Greg, 5 stars! In my opinion, this strip is one of your best and very funny. Been there, done that, have the cuts, bruises, and burn scars to prove it. ( I had a 1960 Chevrolet, 327 small block, Impala SS. The exhaust manifold was over the spark plugs. You could not see the plugs.

years ago there was very little to get in your way under the hood when you worked on your vehicle. now there is everything everywhere and you can’t even get your hand in there without getting a bruise on it. for most of us it is best to leave car repairs left to the mechanics who are trained to do it because the mistakes you make could be more costly than the total amnount of your bill when they do it.

The last car I worked on was my VW in Germany when I was in the army. It had a cracked cylinder head. My buddy said it was easy and we would get in a day. We will do it in the barracks parking lot. It rained all four days of the holiday, twenty trips to the part store and the auto shop for tools I got it done the last evening of the holiday. It was dirty and not fun.

This strip reminds me of all the old strips where Brad would be working on his car and neighbor Diane, who Brad had a crush on, would walk up and say “hi” and Brad would invariably bang his head on the underneath of the car’s hood.

I am a Luannaddict, I read it and the comments every day. This is the first time I felt the need to comment. It has never looked like oily hair on TJ to me. My comment is the car. The open bottle of crankcase oil is on the air filter which is resting on some part of the engine. Why are either of them there when Brad is trying to loosen some nut? There is a socket wrench laying there as well. And what seems to be the battery is too high. So he slips off the nut falls down and forward far enough to hit the filter. That is not likely to happen. But he hits the filter with his chin hard enough to pop the presumably full oil bottle up and while it is going up oil comes out of it. Sure. Then the filter comes to rest father from TJ instead of closer. The bottle comes to rest on the filter instead of under the engine. The socket wrench has fallen. The wrench that slipped off the nut is now on the nut and up when Brad was clearly pushing down. And TJ has not even moved. Ok.

Go Brad!!! If you’re on a budget, and you have the time and ability, fix that car! Simple $$$ example; I had a four cylinder engine blow a head gasket; machine work plus associated parts came to about $400; A friend just had a similar 4 cylinder blow a head gasket, estimate from “professional mechanic” to repair, $3,000!!! Ouch.

Why would anyone place the open oil jug on top of a loose air filter? Making a tower of car parts? Trying to see how long your luck will last? Maybe he contracted the covfefe-19 virus.

He’s either trying to use an “American” socket on a Metric bolt or the bolt has been in and out so often the corners are rounded off and he needs to replace the bolt.
