Here I was thinking perhaps Honeymoon or Moon Pop Pop would have sensed Mysta was in danger and come to the rescue. I sure have enjoyed this story Team Tracy. LOVE ME some Mysta Chimera.
An odd way of putting it since he’s fleeing Mysta/Futura, and giving himself up to Tracy. And considering how easily he got away from Tracy before, I don’t see a reason for him to be so fearful of Tracy in particular now. Sure, he’s a cop pointing a gun at him, and giving up seems like the only option, but the reaction seems odd to me. It seems more like something he’d say if he did an about-face and decided to return to Mysta.
With his fixation, he might think “I’d rather be zapped by Futura. What a way to go!”
In panel two, they both had their guns pointed at each other. If Roboto had just pulled the trigger rather than panicked, he might have shot Tracy and gotten away.
Tracy sits at HQ and waits for a call about a criminal. Then an outrageous character that had nothing whatsoever to do with the original concept of the Dick Tracy strip takes all the action. Then Tracy shows up at the end.
What I just described was the general outline for most of those silly “Dick Tracy” cartoons back in the 60s. But it also described what we just saw the last few weeks.
No detecting, no lab analysis, no following clues to proactively find Roboto in his lair. (What was the point of shoehorning in the bit about Roboto leaving a screw as a “calling card”? We never had Tracy or Sam examining the screw for clues, or anything more about that.)
Just some observations from a still hopeful Dick Tracy fan.
Boomers still stuck in the 60s Ken, probably the nadir decade of the strip. Probably gonna get a return to the moon story soon. It was cool, however, to see Dicko make an appearance after another disappearing act. Excelsior
Out of the frying pan into the fire.Very intelligent decision.Maybe DIck had a small role here, but that’s probably because fans are clamoring for Mysta and wanted her to be “the star”.I’m hoping for an unmasking myself.
1-KABUKI: Damn! Smells like a Brazilian steakhouse in there. Luckily, I only got nicked in the bud BUT IT HURTS LIKE HELL!
2-DT: Hold it right there Halloween Hooligan! KABUKI: It’s Mr. Kabuki you idjit! Wait. Is your gun real?
3-KABUKI: I give. I quit. I surrender! And may I compliment you on having the civilian go in first to roast everybody while you hid here in the back to see if anyone survived? That’s first-class police work. Did you use your mom as a shield back before bullet proof vests were invented? How many flat tires have you had on your way to a “shots fired” call? I think I can guess why you wear yellow. Shouldn’t your name be Buckkkk BuckkkkTracy? Can I interest you in a chicken dinner before we go to the station? My treat. I bet your favorite playwright is Noel COWARD.
This episode to me was just “filler”. To Staton and Curtis, next time expand the storylines. At least you two did a step in the right direction introducing a new villian. Now if y’all can take another step to looking to Generation Xers and Millianials for story ideas. It is the only way the strip is going to stay fresh. Seriously gentlemen do this, don’t take it under advisement.
Be with us on Sunday, when Dr.Zy Ghote and Dr.Sail discover that Pluto really IS a planet after all. Now all they have to do is get back and tell someone.
Back in the day, the villains could and often did dominate Dick Tracy stories for weeks on end. Day after day with no crime detecting being shown, just evil people doing evil stuff. No Tracy fan I’ve ever known complained about all that. As a fan, I loved those sequences. It was fascinating to watch unusual-looking bad guys at work, especially when it involved threatening to do harm to one of the good guys, as when Tracy, Lizz, Junior, etc., were put in danger.
That said, I haven’t see anything much different happening in the current story. The action has been heavily focused on Roboto and his shenanigans. Robbing payroll offices, plotting Mysta’s kidnapping, executing the kidnapping, and then being captured. I realize Mysta is (irrationally) hated by some fans, but overall she is highly regarded, even loved by many, and seeing evil things done to her provided an emotional hook to the story. Plus as always, the art was first rate and often captivating.
I’m not saying there weren’t any problems with the story. The screw as calling card thing was kind of a dumb throw in, the two right hands scene was an obvious mistake, and yes, seeing more detective work behind the scenes would have been appreciated.
Overall, though, I think the Mr. Roboto caper has been interesting, exciting, and even funny at times. Nothing personal, but I think you (and a few others) are way overestimating the problems with it, probably related to your (and their) self-admitted disdain for Mysta and anything to do with the moon era.
To be fair, my enjoyment of the story has definitely been affected by my affection for Mysta and the moon era, but not so much that I can’t see the problems with it. What amazes me is the level of animus directed at Mike and Joe’s work from the usual suspects (not from you!) who seem obsessed with irrationally trashing everything Team Tracy does. It’s become boring and predictable.
Having just seen his hench-thugs roasted by by the unleashed Mysta Chimera (“I’m an actress! Don’t call me Futura!”), Roboto stumbles to the rear (?) door of Kelso Carpentry, seeking to flee, only to find himself confronted by the known-to-be-lethal veteran detective in his distinctive yellow trenchcoat and fedora, gun levelled. The heart has gone out of Mr. Roboto, who was never big on actual violence anyway (heavy on threats but generally seeking to have to go no further than that), and so he gives up to Tracy.
There should be room for a little follow-up (Saturday’s strip; maybe even Sunday’s), as we have Mysta just hanging out front after sizzling Charlie “Slouch Hat” Johnson and Thug #2.mark 2 and still some screwy loose ends with the Roboto character: we have no idea who he is when not in his mask, except for some vague and inconsistent remarks (allegedly works a boring job in a warehouse, but has access to a lot of resources, such as the House on The Outskirts of Town, a limousine and one or more vans, and a staff of robbers and flunkies). Some back-story would indeed be of interest, as well as seeing Mysta back at the Patterson in time for curtain!

Astonishing!
Team Tracy seems only interested in a paycheck these days. Why bother investing time and effort on a superior story, start to finish.
How pathetic that the most suspenseful thing is the fate of the Escargot!

I notice that Robot had his gun in his right hand on Wednesday, and left today. Soi continuity is not a big concern either.

Mysta missed him. He’s lucky. I suppose she went to make curtain time, so he’ll just have to settle for Tracy.

AMAZING…..a criminal who actually has sense enough not to get in a gunfight with Tracy and is aware of his lethal reputation.

Has the time had come at last, to throw away that mask, so Dick Tracy can see, his true identity? (The song keeps coming up each time)
