There’s the question of where’s the line between booklets and books on soft-bound titles, but as far as the school assignments are concerned, the main criterium is whether the teacher accepts that graphic novel as a book for the report they requested.
I suspect that in most grade schools, graphic novels aren’t allowed. You have to go take a “graphic novel” class in college. But I’m a fogy, so I could well be out of touch.
I’m surprised no one yet has mentioned the Heart of the City continuity that addressed this very question: https://www.gocomics.com/heartofthecity/2019/04/13

It sounds like the Arbiter of Book Reality is the unicorn equivalent of Dakota’s mother.

What does she say about e-books? That might be the most divisive subject among book-readers. (For the record, I think e-books are real books.)

I recommend going to the chicken arbiter of book reality: "Book book book book . . . "

I think the Arbiter Of Book Reality has something wrong with her brain besides being a crank.

Marigold’s wording suggests that she completely disagrees with the Arbiter on what isn’t a book.

All books are "real’; whether you believe them or not is up to you and you alone…
