I’ve read some about folks who make a living writing. A significant fraction of them claim that their most important trait is the ability to actually sit down and churn out words, every day, whether they’re “inspired” or not. Day after day after day. Not being a creative type person myself, I’m not able to say whether or not they’re blowing smoke.
Stephan, the truly Creative people don’t get depressed very often because they can change the things that bring them down or at least find a suitable distraction that eases those negative thoughts.
I’ve spent my life as a creative person around others like me and teaching other creative people the craft of writing fiction. Mood swings aren’t that common for those of us who write long form genre fiction. We tend to be mostly Zen when we write because we are too busy juggling things like character, plot, and worldbuilding at once. The business of publishing, however, is a serious source of stress.
Not to worry. There are marvelous modern drugs available for bipolar disorder. They work for everybody except “artists” consistently making bad puns. Electro-shock therapy straightens them out fast!

The chart on the right was taken the day before the manuscript is due. Before that, it’s fairly calm.

It has to require a massive amount of creativity to work backwards from all those terrible puns.

Thankfully, of my five grandchildren, only one is an artist. But this techy now knows dancers are in the best possible physical shape.
