One of the better ones I recall seeing on this theme (don’t remember which ’toon) was where the HR person asked the applicant to explain the employment gap in 2020 on his resume, and he replied, “I was looking for toilet paper.”
Surely you can find better things to do while staying at home. Maybe watch YouTube videos on how to repair motorcycles. I doesn’t matter that you don’t have a motorcycle.
Seriously, it is a time you can “sharpen your saw.” During my recent unemployment, I downloaded the free 30-day trail versions of Crystal Reports, Tableau and Power BI and evaluated them and said so at the bottom of my resume.
This did a couple of things: (1) It’s a sneaky way to get those keywords on my resume. (2) I can honestly answer that I am familiar with the tools and would have no problem working with them. (3) It proves that I am interested in self-improvement.
I also had the ability to pay for an online course to get certification as a SCRUM Master: a skill I’ve been using for 40 years and didn’t know what it was called. But it was another key word on the resume that drew a lot of hits.
One also hopes that parents are taking the time to learn about their children and sharing time instead of the once normal schedule where everyone went in different directions and maybe met for meals. Ours was a fractured society. Maybe renewed contact will make families stronger. I pray so.
Limiting your interests to “stuff you may use in real life” sounds to me like a pretty boring use of time. This is a time to spend on things that are fascinating, not practical. We probably will never get another opportunity to just do what feels good before retirement, use your imagination.
