That reminds me of the episode of M*A*S*H where Hawkeye was sick of seeing army green everywhere. He wanted to see red. Not the bloodstained clothes from the OR, but, “red that’s rosy.” So, I can see where the general would be impressed with flower blooms in wartime.

It’s nice that the General’s most vivid memory is of beauty and not of bloodstained battlefields and destruction.

I remember reading a comment somewhere from a soldier; how beautiful and calm the country side was, and the contrast just an hour or two could make to the country and people. I can picture it now, just like the General said: the gorgeous French countryside: flowers blooming, lush grass and trees, picturesque villas, all quiet and peaceful. And an hour later destruction blood and ripped up turf. War is the most horrific horrible cancer that has gripped the world for too long…

Was there ever a bustle in your hedgerow, General?
