Pens, Mike? For you, yes. For some, they need pencils with erasers.

“Finding the words”? When Mike was writing to Martha he didn’t write page after page of prose professing his love, he just told her what was happening and probably some words about missing her. One would wonder why she’s not writing just to tell him what’s happening to her, her family and their friends. When my wife (girlfriend at the time) went away to college we had just been dating a year, but we still wrote to each weekly. Since these are reruns, the surprise is no longer there. While my wife and I were writing I did come across a definition of a love letter(this is more than fifty years ago), paraphrasing “a love letter is a letter that you don’t know how to start and when you finish you don’t know what you wrote.”Mike should be concern if Martha still wants to continue the friendship. If she doesn’t deem it worthy of investing a time in letter writing, she doesn’t think much of it.

Mike scared her off by ending his letter with “Love, Michael.” Too early in the relationship to be throwing around the “L” word.

    Lynn’s Comments:

Not being good at writing would have been a fair excuse for most kids, but the boy I liked could write like a pro!

My mother tried to split up my girlfriend and I. She sent me on a six week trip with my older brother who was a long haul trucker. When I got home, my girlfriend pulled up in the driveway with my two younger brothers. She had taken them to the beach. My mother’s plan backfired. My girlfriend has now been my wife for 45 years.

Ah…. long distance phone calls. Remember when that was a thing? We have come so far! I remember watching the Jetsons as a kid and they would video phone with each other. It was such a novel concept back then… now everyone does it and doesn’t think twice! What year in the future was that supposed to be, I wonder?

Considering the cost of a long distance call.. something foreign to today’s youth.
