I remember my dad asking a cop about a stop sign near our house that was quite some distance from the intersection. He wondered if he was supposed to stop where the sign was, or nearer the intersection.
The cop answered that the sign was actually too far from the intersection to be legally valid, but that for his own safety, my dad should stop near the intersection and check that it was safe to continue.
