There’s an old classic sci-fi novella by C.M. Kornbluth, “The Marching Morons,” in which a large portion of humanity has become so stupid that they are loaded aboard spaceships and sent off. (With no destination.) Maybe it was my morning walk, doing the do-si-do to avoid unmasked people, that called that to mind.

The first and silliest thing that I remember going around was when people were saying to use a hair dryer on on high heat to blow it up your nose for ten minutes which would damage the mucous membranes and make you susceptible to any virus.
