I learned to read from that book. If you think Spot was bad…Puff was insufferable! ;)

We had a series called “The Little White House” with children Tom, Betty and Susan. I am sure there was a dog, but can’t remember the name…maybe Spot? “Look, Tom. See Spot. See Spot run! Run, Spot, Run!”

My husband, who grew up in Germany, had an early reader series featuring a child named Peter Pimmel. The word Pimmel in German, is slang for a man’s private parts. As, of course, is Peter. How in the world did the authors of these early readers get away with this?

My school had the Alice and Jerry book. It started out, “See the pretty green house”. Anybody else remember that?

I learned how to read from the Dick & Jane Books. That was a long time ago. My avatar is a picture of our Lulu Belle. We lost her last Thursday. It sure has been quiet around here. She’s running with Spot

I used to check the newspaper. I’ll never forget the huge headline “Pearl Harbor Bombed”. I was five. No Dick and no Jane. Did they appear later?

We used “Fun with Grok and Urk”. Of course, this was some time ago…

Most of it was “Run, Grok, run! Toothy is chasing you! Run!”

Anybody remember the “Alice and Jerry” books? They replaced ‘Dick and Jane’ in about 1960.

I worked for Scott Foresman years after they were published. Had paintings of models in lobby. But my favorites are “Dick, Jane and Vampire” and “Dick and Jane Learn Yiddish.”

I learned to read The Cat In the Hat- Dr. Seuss. Then started 1st grade, no kindergarten where we had just moved from. Dick and Jane was boring and not enough different words! Still because I was not social enough for them I got ‘held back’ and had to endure 1st grade a second time even though according to the records I was reading at the 4th grade level. I still have a very low tolerance for social interaction, love my alone time, love books.

No telling what all damage it did to the poor dog to be known by some unchangeable physical characteristic. We need to stage a protest for “Spot!!”

JUSTICE FOR THE DOG FORMERLY KNOWN AS SPOT!

(As you can see, I have my sign all picked out.)

I learned on Dr. Seuss and Dick and Jan and the back of cereal boxes, billboards, ads on the sides of trucks and buses, and anything I could lay my eyes on that had words. My daughter started with Dr. Seuss and McGuffey’s Readers (she went to a Private Christian School from pre-kindergarten until 4th grade). She also read anything she could lay her hands on. We always had books around and each of us might have anywhere from 2-6 books going at the same time. Still do. :o)
