It’s absolutely a crime that Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko aren’t as well known and worshipped and loved by the general public as Stan Lee sometimes seems to be; nobody outside of really hardcore comics fans would have heard of Lee if he hadn’t worked with Kirby and Ditko. On the other hand, I wonder whether Kirby and Ditko would be nearly so widely known as they are if they hadn’t worked with Lee. Nearly all of the features Jack and Steve collaborated on with Stan continued to thrive uninterrupted long after they had moved on, while all of those they created on their own sputtered out after a year or two at most. Even Captain America might be as relatively obscure as the Newsboy Legion if not for Stan’s part in reviving him.
I don’t mean to distract from your very well-deserved Kirby tribute here, but I’m troubled by screeds elsewhere suggesting that Stan barely deserves any credit at all for the Marvel Age and the Marvel Universe, and that all the credit he does get was stolen.

That’s what genius looks like. I never brought a romance comic in my life. I would have slapped down my 12 pennies for that story!

All I know about Jack Kirby I learned from Denzel Washington in Crimson Tide:
“Everybody who reads comic books knows that the Kirby Silver Surfer is the only true Silver Surfer.”

Just goes to show. Never propose during a square dance or similar. The one you’re proposing to may just do-si-do right out your arms.

SO glad to see this tribute! I’m still steamed that on Jack’s one hundredth birthday there’s was no Google doodle commemorating the event.

A great tribute, John!! I’m a big fan of Kirby. Will be anticipating the next two days. But….if you do a Ben Grimm/Alicia panel…be easy…LOL.
