A recent study has shown that people who smoke are twice as likely to got COVID and those who Vape are five times as likely to get it. When they do get sick, they will get much sicker than those who do not smoke and could wind up with permanent lung damage.
I wish I still had the cash register from my mom and dad’s little store on the Oregon coast when I was a kid. It was huge, and brass, and the numbers were paper, and popped up when you hit the big buttons. And it made the cha-ching sound. It was wonderful!
I see Gus is wearing his mask just like most of the older customers where I work do. I read an article that said the NOSE is where the virus is most active at infecting yourself and spreading to others. I decided to quit my retail job because the customers weren’t wearing masks correctly, were belligerent about it, and didn’t practice social distancing despite all the signs that were posted and the markings on the floor. I don’t need the stress or the money that badly.
My first important job involved a ringing cash register with FOUR drawers (it was orange). For months I dreamed that I was waiting on impatient customers, and I heard bells ringing all night long!
My poor 91yo mom spends most of her time now staying in her 2 room apartment at the assisted living residence she lives in. Luckily they have been VERY CAREFUL and have had extremely few residents get ill. Unfortunately a good part of why we had move there was she was spending too time alone and getting confused as a result.
Meals are brought to them – no more eating in the dining room. No more movies in the theater onsite. No more going to the coffee shop for pastries (no charge). No more walking outside. No going to weekly religious services or to the lobby Friday night for when the rabbi’s wife lights the Friday night candles and has wine and Challah for them. Or even just to see her friends.
But they have reached the point where when there have been no cases in 2 weeks among residents or (more likely to be ill) the staff, they let rotating groups of small numbers of the residents walk around and for awhile even restarted movies- though in the multipurpose/synagogue room not in the theater.

I miss cash registers ringing.

You know things are bad when Gus throws away a perfectly good cigar.

They don’t ring? My tinnitus is worse than I thought.

I’ve had an offer from my son to come live in his basement. I thanked him, but passed. There’s still a few years of independence left . . . I hope.

Doesn’t look as if Gus is a bell-ringer these days.

Folks, the mask has to go OVER the nose. This public service announcement is brought to you by … um … common sense?
unfair.de about 4 years ago
I would’ve guessed Gus is smarter than depicted here. Not putting the mask over the nose leaves most of the inconvenience and none of the benefits.

Just as some other phrases still are used by the Oldie Goldies, when a hunk o’money comes our way we still like to exclaim “KAAHH-CHING!”
That was the cash register.

General comment (not about Gus): it’s a tough time to be an extrovert living alone.

The excellent British comedy show “Still Open All Hours” has a very funny running joke with a cash register… ☺

Gus and his wife must have had their daughter late in life. He’s a lot older than A&J.

If I had a guest house, I’d turn it into my game house. But, I’d have to keep it secret from Mrs. Baker.
