Growing up my brother would always threaten to run away from home. Raising us by herself, my mother would ask, “before or after dessert?”. He would answer “After.” Then after dinner, and dessert, she reminded him of what he said earlier in the day. His reply…“It’s too dark out to run away now, I’ll run away tomorrow.”
Now ironically he and his wife are living with mom, and I am 2000 miles away from home. I am glad he is there for her in her later years, just wish I lived closer to the family.
That used to be enough to close down childish behavior. No longer. Any kid who makes that threat will first broadcast his/her woes on the digital stream and get lots of support and some very bad advice for walking out. They forget strangers don’t care about what happens to them.
I ran away from home when I was five. I only got about half a mile away but it was enough to convince me I had to have a better plan. When I was a teenager, I ran away to the Air Force, but that’s another story.
When I was young, I ran away from home. . . after a couple hours, I returned only to find my parents had moved and did not leave a forwarding address – never did find them.

There’s a circus you can join in the WH, if you survive, that is.

Now only if they will stay away after they leave home. I don’t mind them coming back to visit.
