I grew up in the Midwest, and live in New England. People occasionally ask me if I’m from “down south”.

I always introduce a friend of mine that has that soft Kentish accent as Australian but he wants to be British. Once I plant that seed in someone’s mind, he’s Australian forever. It’s my running joke with him.

I once hired a young Ethiopian exchange student to work in a shop I managed.

She told me she was truly amazed that Americans were so horrible at recognising ethnicities.

Tall, slender, sweet-faced and Black… with the distinctive corn-row braids of her native country, and a heavy Ethiopian accent…

I can only think it was because she was so beautiful,

that she was so often asked if she were French.

When I saw an old ad for Aeroplane Jelly (“It’s jelly good!”), I thought it was the most British thing I’d ever seen. It was Australian.

While traveling the Alaska Highway in Canada, I met a flagwoman at a construction zone with an Australian accent. I commented that she sounded Australian and she was amazed that I didn’t think like everyone else that she had an English accent.
