Now that light switch will be linked to the internet so that wherever you can get a signal on your phone, you can turn that light on or off. And another channel will show if that light actually is on or off. And send you an alarm if the light is on when it should be off. All w/end-to-end encryption so nobody messes w/your light!
WOW, talk about using a broad brush to paint engineers. The light switches that you use in commercial buildings ARE specified and laid out by engineers. If you mean Software Engineer, say it. If you mean Electrical Engineer, say that. I am a mechanical Product Engineer and my job function is as close to Software Engineering as a cartoonist job is to brain surgery.
Back when Lotus 1.2.3 was the thing I could write and and debug dot command structure. We ran an apartment location service and there were a ton of search variables but it actually worked. Handy being able to change code on the fly since we were the only user.
Back in the day the password line was the second or third line of plain text code and said Password: Drove an old employer crazy by breaking into our office computer with in minutes of them doing a reset. Then they lost head office password and I locked myself in their office for an hour (it took two minutes) and made them pay for best restaurant for GF and me.
I don’t care to parse the ramifications of the light switch/Alexa, I’m more intrigued that no one has commented yet on Herbie sharing a coffee encounter with a female.
I remember asking one of our IT guys if I should learn to write a software manual, since I’m a pretty good writer. He said that to qualify I’d have to describe how to install a lightbulb in at least 100 steps.
Wow! Don’t know any engineers do you? I’ve been one and known many. Engineers spent 90% of their time simplifying extremely complicated things to that barely sufficient interface you disdain. If it were easy, everybody would be doing it. The world you live in – everything that doesn’t grow – was designed by engineers, competing with each other for better designs.

Does Herbie have a girlfriend now? Or is she his sister? Anyway, she could be an interesting (and attractive) addition to the lineup.

And they won’t come out of their office to turn the lights on to find out what they did.
