Once as a child, and once as an adult I played Monopoly (with other players, of course) fully and exactly as specified in the rules. It was like a different game.
In 2010, Steve Kelly penned a comic that showed a woman holding a Monopoly box with the title Recession Edition. The guy next to her said, It’s like the original, only nobody has money, houses don’t sell, and the little car token has a family living in it. Bitterly ironic then. Darker now.
When I was a kid, we could only get one TV station and two radio stations, of course there was no internet, and sometimes a houseful of visiting relatives would be trapped inside for hours or days due to severe weather. Under those conditions, Monopoly would of course be resorted to. But I can’t even imagine anyone being willing to play it if there was anything else to do.

Monopoly ends in my experience with somebody flipping the board.

I have a monopoly game still in its shrink wrap. I can’t find anyone willing to play.
