In 1951 Robert Rauschenberg created a series of “paintings” which were solid white. He later did a black series and a red series. One of the white ones sold in 2014 for $15 Million.
Reminds me of an old joke about a 1960s automobile pinstriping contest. On black cars and using white paint, two artists tried to out-do each other by crowding more and more striping onto the surfaces, using finer and finer lines. The judge said “looks like you’ve managed to paint a black car white, by using a very small brush”.

Overheard in a gallery opening – “Sure it’s art, but where am I going to find a couch that matches?”
