The first Christmas that my husband & I spent together, we spent the day with my parents. My mother gave my husband an Old Spice gift box. My husband very politely thanked her (looking just a tad like Garfield in the last panel). I shocked him by saying to my mother, “Mom, Old Spice makes him sneeze.” He was further shocked when my mother smiled & took him to her “gift stash”: she shopped year ‘round – usually yard sales & consignment shops – and had them divided in the cellar. She told him to pick something he liked. I don’t think he’d ever quite recovered from that.
It is obvious that Garfield rejects the present that the spider gave him, hence the fake smile. He dislikes the gift but acknowledges that the spider cared about him. #graciouscat :)

“Why… Yes… Thank you! Hope you don’t mind. I placed it next to a bunch of seeds so I could have Cat Grass. Nutrients!”
Mumbling under breath, “If I chew on the grass… it will slow me down in wanting to swat your entire family with a newspaper!”

Just give it to John again. He kind of asked for it with that bad advice.

Garfield’s frantically holding a newspaper behind his back.

That’s a Bait-and-Switch. At first, we were thinking that Jon was referring to Odie, but it was actually the spider.
