I’m sorry but when was “Cathy” ever funny? She thinks she looks fat in a swimsuit and goes “aack”? On top of that she had no nose? As a woman I never had any use for it, I could say worse than that but I better not.

The one I loved the most was Rina Piccolo’s “Tina’s Groove”. But I guess it didn’t exist in 1993.

Before that, there were Dale Messick, Gladys Parker and Marty Links.

Some smoke a cigar. It’s not all pipe smokers.

And how funny one is depends on what’s in the pipe….

I thought this (lack of female professionals) was an observation mostly true for scientists. Didn’t know it was even worse when it came to cartoonists.

The writer of “Stone Soup” is a woman Jan Eliot I think her name is. But that one’s gone into syndication now.

Bern kind of has a point about the pipe smoking. Back then (28 years ago) I think Matt Groening (from his Life in Hell strip of the ’80s transitioning into the Simpsons) and Berkley Breathed (doing Outland after winding up Bloom County in ’89 or so) both smoked pipes but I suspect they did not use tobacco all the time ;)

They used to say it was because women cartoonists didn’t look good picking up cigarette butts in the street.
