This is coming off like Brother North-Wind’s Secret. Is Georgia by any chance a fan of John Crowley? Is the Big Pink House featured in The Architecture of Country Houses?
The first groundhog saying is shown Feb 2, 2019. If you go back to look at it, then go forward a day for the naming of the cats and then another day to begin the arrival of Beatrix out of the void.
Oh my heart just melted, that is a beautiful quote. I think that overall one of my favorite quotes is “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” from Gandalf.
He’s right. If you look for it, you will find it. If you look for kindness, you will find it. If you look for evil, you will find. Concentrate on looking for good things.
It’s going to be six more weeks of winter anyway. So it doesn’t matter if you’re half full or half empty. Now it used to be that if the groundhog sees it’s shadow it means six more weeks of winter WEATHER. Winter and winter weather are not the same thing.
What is implied is that “six more weeks of winter” means six more weeks of cold, winter weather, which includes snow and ice. It is not a calendar-based saying. If he doesn’t see his shadow, then spring will come early (snow/ice/extreme cold will end soon). I’m a meteorologist (since 1980). We were taught such things in college. ;-)
In ancient times in Europe it was a widespread custom to perform weather predictions based on the opposite of the weather on the cross quarter days (the days halfway between the solstices and equinoxes)—Feb 2, May 2, August 2, and Oct. 31st. For unknown reasons it fell out of favor except for Feb. 2 now known as Groundhog Day—perhaps because people were most worried about whether the cold weather of winter would last longer or be over soon. In Ireland Bhrid’s, aka Bridget’s, Day, Feb. 2nd had this rhyme: If Bhrid’s Day be bright and clare

Ordinarily I really like timeloop episodes (every sci-fi franchise has one!) One of these days I should probably watch Groundhog Day.

Combine that proverb with the final panel of yesterday’s strip, and make it a poster. Pretty please with bacon on it?

Has there ever been an eclipse on Groundhog Day? Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow and we get six more weeks of darkness?

Made this up myself
The light of the day, the dark of the night,
Gazing on a beautiful sight,
Silver stars in a dark night sky
Dark shadows on a sunlit day
We see them both, and we all say
Shadows of day, sparkle of night,
All become a most beautiful sight,
We may see dark, we may see light,
But whatever we see we all are right,
And we know that all will be alright!
