You have to have some envy for cats. Lie around and sleep for like 15 hours a day, but still stay in shape enough to go from unconscious to 30 MPH in nothing flat.
A memory. My brother & his wife had an Irish Setter, a miniature Spaniel, a cat, and a baby. When I’d come to visit, the Setter would knock me down, then the Spaniel, cat & baby would all climb into my lap before I could get up. It was a conspiracy! LOL
This part of Hobbes’s character was inspired by Bill Watterson’s cat Sprite. Another part of his character – which is seen in the GROSS Club story arcs – was inspired by the boy who lived next door to Bill Watterson and formed an anti-girl club with him. Yet another part of Hobbes’s character was inspired by Bill’s brother Tom. That side is evident in the strips where Calvin and Hobbes share a bedroom.
Where is that guy who likes to debate whether Hobbes is imagined or real? Maybe Calvin can go inside and explain how his imagination got him into the condition in which he is portrayed in the last panel?
The final Sunday strip in the old format, before Bill Watterson’s first sabbatical and the subsequent redesigning of the Sunday format. The way Hobbes stretches reminds me so much of my old cat when he’d get up from a nap, particularly the arching.
If humans were are strong and agile as a cat, I could easily leap up to, and into, a 2nd story window, maybe a 3rd floor on a good day. These creatures seem to have the muscle tone of a bowl of Tapioca pudding, just try, stepping on a tail (by accident) and see how they respond.

You should have braced yourself, Calvin. You know what’s coming when you open the door.

This measures how much Hobbes loves Calvin. A little bit exuberant, maybe.

Yes, I’m sure it has nothing to do with Hobbes’ weight or his claws or his teeth.
