I do like to stroll through the bakery section, or drool over the offerings of our local specialty cake shop, but I always leave empty-handed because I know I can bake (and usually have on hand) better at home. Currently I’m well supplied with chocolate chip cookies, walnut quick bread, and English muffin bread. Last week I made apple tarte tatin, and before that it was Amish friendship bread—all major yum!

Over all the wonderful, sugared and fruity delights of a bakery, I will always choose bread, warm from the oven.

I still haven’t had my doughnut for the 2020 decade yet.

We live in the South. There are few bakeries at all. So what you get is supermarket “goodies.”

For generations up until a year or so ago, many people had a kind of informal weight management regimen. The activity revolved around the work environment. Getting prepared for work, getting to work, movement in the office or shop, and walking to lunch or elsewhere, and maybe something after work, then getting home. Not to mention interaction with others. Each item had its own effect on one’s physical well-being. Work from home changes all that. Bodies and minds take a long time to re-adjust to a schedule that drastically revises those settings.

Never have this problem. My eyes are bigger than my wife’s stomach, though.

I realized I was gluten-intolerant when I was in my 20s. It was years before those pastry case displays stopped looking like food. Recently, they have lured me back with gluten-free confections and my stomach is, indeed, bigger than my eyes, much bigger. :)

Alpo Bakery? I’ll pass, thanks, but I know some dogs who might enjoy it.
