This week seems to be going on a theme of “The Patterson parents being frugal with their kids.” Mike has to pay for his own gas and car insurance if he wants to drive and it appears that Elizabeth is going to have to pay for her own haircuts if she wants to keep her mother from chopping away at her hair.
Well, she is old enough to decide if she wants longer bangs. It is time for her to decide how she wants to look. If Elly wants her to see better and be dismissive of hair style, tough. Let her bangs grow long and before Elly knows it, she will curl the former bangs behind her ears or pull them into a ponytail. She is 11-12, kind of too old for bangs – at least until she is older and if bangs are in style, she might have them again.
I’m thinking that Ellie will never stop doing things of this nature to Mike and Elizabeth, even when they become adults. No matter how old your children get, they’re still little ones to you.;-D
One time my mother offered to trim my hair. She had done it before, no problem. However, THIS time, my dad got involved. He stood behind her, “It’s crooked; take a little off the left.” “Too much! Take a little off the right.” etc. My waist-length hair ended up just brushing my shoulder blades. Oh, I forgot to mention that I was 38 years old & pregnant.
Good lord! MOM thinks her bangs are long, so MOM cuts them. How about ask Liz if she wants her hair cut? And if she wants it long, get her a few barrettes. Or look up ways to style long bangs. Geez!
My mother cut my hair once. I was 13 and my hair reached the middle of my back with no layers, so I agreed to let her cut it and give me some layers. When she was through, my hair was as short as my brother’s, about an inch and a half long. I was devastated. I cried for days. I never allowed her to cut my hair again.
Mom you cut too short. I remember growing my bangs out but i was much older, I let the bangs grow as long as my hair was which was below the shoulder length that was in my early 20’s, now much -much older very short and gray hair.
Didn’t realize Elly such a controlling parent. Here are some common signs of controlling parents: Demand blind obedience and conformity. Do not allow children to participate in or question the parents’ decisions. Do not let their child make their own decisions. Do not encourage choice or independence. Dictate every aspect of the child’s life.
I hate having any hair in my face, it’s why at 75 I wear a pony tail. I’d like to go with ahead-band, and wear it down, but it’s too crowded behind my ears with a mask & glasses. Mom did want me to keep it short, I had it waist length a couple of times, partly in rebellion.
My mom never did try to cut my hair for me, she always had it professionally done. When I wanted to go from shoulder length to pixie, she took me to a proper hairdresser and the bangs still got cut too short. My photo in my senior year book shows just how short my hair was after that cut. (It’s even shorter now, except for the bangs part.)

Sometimes Elly should just spend money at the salon

One thing my mother NEVER did was cut her kids hair herself. That’s what barbers hairdressers are for.

Made the mistake of cutting my bangs while wet. They surely shrink as they dry.

I feel your pain Liz! My dad was a barber and my mom got him to cut my bangs and he always cut them too short and they looked terrible.

During the plague, I’ve been cutting my own hair. I’m no fashion plate and just use the cheaters to get it short and out of my eyes.

Here’s my advice to new dads out there: Never, never attempt to trim your baby daughter’s bangs. Never.

Goodness Ellie. Don’t you know the latest teen styles? This one is to have your hair so long in front you can’t see at all!

They both should know better than to do this. It never turns out perfectly done.

Never let anyone but a professional trim your bangs. You will always look bad. Ally has no known skills judging by her own appearance…
