I was just thinking the other day about the possibility of making the biggest city in a state automatically being designated the capital. There would be other considerations, though. Besides, if population fluctuates…
a lot of states do not have the biggest city as it’s capital- Los angles, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Seattle, Las Vegas, Trenton, New Haven, Detroit,
Upon first hearing the term “cancel culture” I would have wagered it was coined by political progressives who historically exhibit a genius for substantial and catchy phraseology.
(E.g., “New Frontier” vs. the blah “Silent Majority,” “Peace, Land and Bread” vs. the clunky “Orthodoxy, Autocracy and Nationalism.”)
The question was poorly worded. The teacher should have been more specific. Danae deserves at least a B for a great report, even if it was on the wrong city. …no child left behind. Maybe ignorant, but not left behind. …yeah, sarcasm.
My Bro-in-law was a composition/english teacher at a small college in N.M. After first assignment he had to inform the class (again) that Wiki is not factual. If used, paper was returned and points taken.
During and after the war of 1812, several states moved their capitals from coastal cities to inland towns that were safer from British (or other) naval attacks. Massachusetts came close to moving their capital from Boston to Amherst. I suspect the case was the same for Maine moving their capital from Portland to Augusta.
Just as a point of USA clarification: “Capital” (when it isn’t referring to wealth or an uppercase letter) refers to the city that serves as the seat of a country’s or state’s government. “Capitol” is the building in which the legislative body of government meets. When “capitol” is capitalized (sic), it refers to the United States Capitol, a building in Washington, DC, that hosts Congress, the legislative branch of the US federal government. Of course, the capitol building is always in the capital city — maybe that is why they are spelled differently.
In my state of SC, Charleston, the largest city, was the state capital. Then, the legislature decided to move the state capital to Columbia in order to push slavery into the central and western sections of the state. Now, Columbia, the state capital, is the second largest city next to Charleston.
Performers, and this now includes political speechifiers, have always been subject to cancellation, if their message was hateful, violent, harmfully stupid or, yes, just plain not popular enough. It has nothing to do with the First Amendment. You can say what you like but no one guarantees you a venue. It’s just business.
Um; anybody know how many SciFi movies are out there on the market regarding the Siri’s and others on the market ? Reason I inquire is that I’ve been able to watch old reruns of The Outer Limits and last week there were two episodes that were great ! PS-the humans never had a chance !
When I lived in Waterville, which is just north of Augusta, we’d go there for some great seafood – fried clams and onion rings and fresh, warm homemade donuts.
Before I moved south, I adopted a cat from the Augusta Animal shelter. We went in just to look, but just one glance at “Ben” sitting in his cage, an older male cat who’s owner had ended up in a nursing home, and he was mine. Or I was his. Had him for over 10 years, he was a one person cat, didn’t like other cats but got along great with my 98lb hound mix. Miss them both.
It’s a general rule that capitals are never major seaports. In the Old World, the capital may be near a seaport, but the port is distinct (Ostia, Piraeus, Leith….), and in the New World, there is almost always a considerable distance, except for Boston. Portland, as the name suggests, is a seaport. Augusta is in what is traditionally called “Central Maine”, although it is far southwest of the actual center.
I miss my gifted kids who are so sure that they KNOW THEIR ANSWER is CORRECT. Some argued it is so because their parent said so… I taught gifted kids at a Title I school for over 20 years. Seriously, I do miss my kids and teaching! I’m just relieved I’m not dealing with zoom-classes.
If that teacher wants facts, s/he can google for them. How about some points for creativity, or ingenuity in the yankee tradition of use-what’s-handy? Doesn’t that count as exercise for a young inquiring mind?

I’m glad she got the correct city for her report after all. Getting an “F” would have really upset her, especially since she wouldn’t have known why.

Texas has the same thing. Houston and Dallas are both larger but Austin is the Capitol.
