Or, as one of my favorite super-heros put it:“Always… ALWAYS remember. Less is LESS. More is MORE. More is BETTER, and TWICE as much is GOOD too.“Not enough is BAD, and too much is never ENOUGH except when it’s JUST ABOUT RIGHT.”—The Tick (the large blue nigh-invulnerable superhero, not the bug)
Here’s where we throw in the old joke about the backfiring genie. Promised a guy 3 wishes but said that, whatever he wished for, his hated ex-wife would get double that. Wish #1: A million dollars. Wish #2: Round-the-world cruise. Wish #3: Give a kidney to somebody who really needed it.
“If one is good, two must be twice as good” has been described as how people with addictive personalities think.
As Caulfield suggests, though, even if the thing doesn’t become harmful in large enough quantities, you can build up tolerances so you need more and more while enjoying it less and less. Once you start chasing the dragon, the faster you run the farther behind you fall.

More is not necessarily a bad thing, and even a little of certain things can be seriously problematic. So “if a little is good, more is better” seems like a useless rule to follow OR avoid.
I like the code I’ve had most of my life, with a nod to (I believe) Oscar Wilde: Everything in moderation, especially moderation in moderation. But I like what it’s morphed to in my mind, and though someone surely beat me to this one as well, I don’t know who it is: Excess in moderation, but never moderation to excess.
With some compounds your body builds a tolerance like caffeine and cocaine. If you reach a point too much all you can do is take large amounts to keep the withdrawal symptoms at bay. That is addicted.

When I interact with folks new to the US I use this single line to describe our culture: “If anything is good, more of it is better.”
