“Three may keep a secret if two of them are dead”—Benjamin Franklin, “Poor Richard’s Almanac”, 1735. Or, in other words, if more than one person knows a secret, it becomes the lead story on the 6 o’clock news!
The U.S. government and/or NASA keeping a secret? Just ask the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or the Peoples Republic of China, if they can keep a secret. Or one could ask any news-desk of any paper/cable/television/internet-news company.
This is Grimes law, a mathematical law about how long conspiracies can last, which in this case would be not long. Of course, given the things people believe these days, all bets are off.
One of my favorite comments on this topic was made in 2007 by Mark Sachs, artist for the (now-long-since-completed) webcomic A Miracle of Science:
“Seriously, anybody who’s been paying the slightest bit of attention at any time in the past fifty years should have realized by now that the United States Government couldn’t cover up a cupcake with vanilla frosting.”
The moon landing represented a major triumph over the USSR in the space race. If it had been faked, the KGB would surely have found a way to expose it. The fact that they couldn’t is proof enough that it really happened.
Which is EXACTLY why I do not believe there is a vaccination conspiracy. The government would screw up a two-car funeral. (Effectiveness is another subject.)
I have a friend who would like to talk to the Perfesser about this. Col. Aldrin? Yeah, he’s right over there, the bird brain. (Even Jeff accepted the truth. This strip has taken a nosedive since he passed)
Seriously, there is an old saying “Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.”
The whole fake Moon landing thing seems to be based on misinterpretation of a work of fiction “Capricorn One” by Ron Goulart, who had previously published scores of HUMOROUS SCIENCE FICTION. He does not believe it was faked. I do not believe it was faked. At that time, we did not have the technology to produce the lighting and gravity effects, for one thing.

No, but it makes for a good movie/book for the gullible.

There’s also the question of whether they could muster sufficient competence to pull off a convincing fake.

if 3 people know a secret, it will remain a secret only if 2 of them are dead

We may laugh, but it’s the truth. Ditto “aliens” at Groom Lake and the rest of the knuckle-dragger nonsense.
