Excellent rendition of mussels, especially the ones in close-up in the second panel: not only the color, but also the little curved growth lines on the shells. Also, great underside of the wharf!
When I was a kid, I’d go down to the beach, pick a mussel off the rocks, crack it open and use it for bait. Good bait, but gross and disgusting. I could never eat the things.
Every day I always save this strip for last, wrapping up my comics reading with Wallace and the gang because it always makes me smile and often makes me laugh out loud. I also enjoy these comments because I typically discover something I didn’t know – or missed, like the seagull today – and this board is so…pleasant…compared to other boards. What a delightful community this is!
Took reading the comments for me to get the joke. But why is there a speech balloon coming from that cottage in panel three with the name of the Author?
Midwesterner, so I was also thrown off, not knowing mussels from barnacles and expecting Barnacle Boy to be part of the joke, from Amelia’s name for Spud a week or so back.
Pulling mussels from a shell. That’s what you do with what Wallace has. Spud is just flexing muscles. There was a song by the band Squeeze. That had the chorus: “Pulling mussels from a shell.” I always thought it said, “Pulling muscles for Michelle.” LOL.

Just a little misunderstanding. At least they’ll have nice dinner.

That did take me a while to figure out. At first, I thought Spud wanted Wallace to attach the shells down along his spine to make a wimpy Godzilla.

I would have thought they were barnacles, and not something to eat.

Wallace is such a good friend, helping Spud get some mussels – and seagull is extremely interested in the leftovers..!

Ok, I live in a town in Montana where cows outnumber people, so it took a LOOOONG time to get this one. Still funny though.

Mussels have become a delicacy, evidently.. just shows what a good propaganda campaign can accomplish.
