    Well THAT was pretty non-linear.

I have always understood it to be that Englishmen were creatures of HABIT and if it was TIME TO GO OUT, then they WOULD GO OUT. That worked pretty well when the biggest problem was precipitation. In India, though, everyone else but mad dogs pays attention to the heat at mid-day.

England is farther north than much of the United States, but it is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Unfortunately, the Gulf Stream is part of the thermohaline conveyor system, which relies, in part, on the salinity of the oceans. The melting glaciers and polar ice caps is desalinating the oceans (all that melting ice and snow is fresh water) so that the weather is going to change in may places due to global warming.

It was too late before I realized that the panel frames were arrows supposedly directing my reading.

If Caulfield is going to take the position that a good rant should not be interrupted by the truth, he’s going to end up in the Q.

You do realise much of the UK spent last week in 30 degrees Celsius weather?

I’m an Englishman, I stay out of the sun now, though not as a youth!Ever since I spent time in driving across the Mohave dessert and in Phoenix AZ I will always enjoy a cool spring or autumn shower!

I googled “Noel Coward Songs” and found one titled Mad Dogs and Englishmen. From it: “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.”

Noel Coward was just repeating the wisdom of the native population of any tropical clime. My first trip to Nigeria, I went for a run in the midday sun, and my hair was falling out in the shower.

Caulfield may be pretty bright, but he’s not bright enough to realize that not all statements about Englishmen are statements about Englishmen IN ENGLAND.

Another good English aphorism one shouldn’t ‘blot one’s copy book’. “Just isn’t done, old chap.”

The problem with those who say “Why study history, I can just Google anything I want in a fraction of the time?” Yes, but you don’t know how that fact fits into the broader picture, and therefore how to prevent repeating painful lessons. As an example, our current leadership never studied the lessons of Vietnam, hence we spent 20 yrs in Afghanistan.

Caulfield (if that is indeed Caulfield) needs to learn a little about continental vs oceanic climates. Makes all the difference.

Another fun fact: Venice is farther north than Vladivostok.

“Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun” is purely political – specifically anti-colonialist. The first part suggests they are crazed and viscous. Then we get them foolish, and behaving in tropical colonies as they do at home. The colonies in question are mostly India and the West Indies, maybe some in the Middle East.
