You’d think the extra air in Calvin’s head would help.

in some future C&H arc, Calvin does — rather unintentionally — float away while holding onto his balloon

If you’ve never had a helium balloon in the car when you accelerate or turn, you’ve missed an interesting observation. First time I tied one to the e-brake lever in the middle to get it home, I was astounded! Obvious in retrospect though.

Too bad Calvin gave up so easily. He could have become the next “Lawn Chair Larry” who earned an “At Risk Survivor” citation when the Darwin Awards were handed out after his escapade:

I know that the entire joke is that Calvin’s mistaken, but why would he think that standing on a ladder would help to begin with?

Every time I give Calvin credit for his intelligence, (his vocabulary is beyond many adults I know) a strip like this comes along where I wonder why it didn’t occur to him that if the the balloon was going to make him rise, it would have done so while he was walking to the ladder.

If the balloon wouldn’t lift him when he’s on the ground, why would it lift him when he’s on a ladder — sometimes child psychology eludes me.

About 10 years ago, the church youth group had some activity involving helium balloons in the sanctuary. Needless to say, we had several get loose and no way to reach them because of the vaulted ceiling. Latex balloons leak fairly quickly, but mylar ones have staying power. We put double sticky tape on the top of a mylar balloon on a long ribbon and got them down that way.

You did not fit into Archimede’s principle of floatation. A bigger balloon with more buoyancy could have made you soar high above Hobbes.

Not to be a Debby downer but please dispose of your balloons after use. They are washing up on shores everywhere and birds choke on them. Thank you!
