I don’t know how much we should be paying teachers…but I DO know that they should NOT be having to buy supplies with their own money. That’s absolutely insane!

It’s absolutely tragic that this is what we have to rely upon for school funding. Maybe if students just declared war on the federal government?

I had a teacher that sold the needed supplies. Forgot your pen, she’d sell you one for 25 cents.

Not as important as it once was now that all the kids have iPads and attend school via Zoom. Even the poorest schools in my area have these things courtesy of the Federal Government.

We “Elf” using Donors Choose. Also donate 6 backpacks with supplies through A..com to the local school district. When I was a single mom I got help, so now I pay it back (forward?). It feels good.

Every teacher thanks you. Parents who are not not able to afford all of the required supplies thank you. My teacher SIL never let her husband see her check book. She din’t want him to know how much she spent on class supplies.

When I was in school the teachers and school didn’t buy school supplies. We had to buy our own…

My niece just graduated from college with the goal of being an elementary school teacher, lower grades. My sister and I gave her money as a present; she’s going to use it to buy supplies.

(sung to the tune of “We Are Santa’s Elves” from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer)

    We are teachers’ elves

    Filling classroom shelves.

    Pencils, papers,

    Glue and erasers.

    We are teachers’ elves.

    It’s our main concern

    That all kids can learn.

    You can’t buy it?

    We will supply it!

    We are teacher’s elves.

We’ve a special job each Fall

    When the school year starts.

Helping out the kids really warms our hearts!

    Teachers are surprised

    By these free supplies.

    And we bet you

    They won’t forget you.

    We are teachers’ elves.

It’s nice that there are Elves. It is sad that they are required. W cut out the teacher’s tax deduction for classroom supplies ($500) at the federal level and most governors (Ahnold did it to California) did in 2005. Those teachers can’t get away with stiffing the billionaires and war mongers for their deductions any longer.

Husband was the exec director of a mental health counseling program for children which was also their school (not a residential school -this was the last try at keeping the children out of being sent away to a residential program). Staff – teachers, counselors, secretaries, administrators were paid maybe 75% of what same would be paid in schools as they were private, not for profit though tuition was paid by the various school districts sending children to them and none were in the state teachers’ pension plan. Children in the program could come from school districts from the richest in the 2 county + area to the poorest – all mixed together.

It used to amaze husband that when parent came in who claimed the lowest incomes in poverty areas – their children getting free breakfast and lunch, etc they would drive up in luxury cars and have the newest, best smartphones. The parents of children from better off areas would come in with cheaper cars and old cell phones. All a matter of where one’s priorities are.

And, quite frankly the teachers and counselors (same teachers’ union covered both) would have done better in salary and benefits if they did not have a union. The union would be negotiating for marked parking spaces for each staff (really would you want you emotionally disturbed students knowing which car was yours when they mad at you – and there was excess parking spaces, so not due to shortage) to the detriment of the professional staff. Another time the state offered a one year extra bonus for all the professional staff, but agency had to turn it down as union would allow unless staff would get annually and it was only being given for one year. If the union was of any value negotiations would be for reimbursement for any supplies they bought and higher salaries as union would turn down higher salary offers by agency for lower amounts it wanted to give staff.
