Jon Stewart is still having to fight Congress to remember, to fund support for those who ran into those buildings to help. Those who helped are still dying as a result of their courage. Stand up for our first responders with your Congressmen.
It was a very hard time for our nation. To admit we are vulnerable scared all of us. The greatest thing Bush did was his speech 3 days later. It changed the nation’s attitude from undeniable shock and fear to unity and cause. People did not care about your color, religion or politics. Americans banded together. It was glorious. Too bad that feeling ended.
We need that unity now. We face an assault that’s killed over half a million Americans and needlessly threatens more. Don’t weep over the first responders killed that day if you’re unwilling to take the tiny step of getting vaccinated, to help protect the first responders of today.
never forget? please tell our politicians – they’ve forgotten everything our country was founded on as well as what freedom means AND sadly so to have way too many in this country. short 20 year memories.
We literally decided to chaotically flee the headquarters of our attackers, on the 20 yr anniversary of their vicious historic attack. Because we refused to win for those 20 years.
And we’re not even allowed to mention who the attackers were, or what motivated them. Because that would make us bad, er, somehow.
The terrorists made a serious miscalculation. In using planes as a weapon to destroy us, they managed to unite us against them. Now 20 years later we realize they could just use social media to even more devastating effect. Perhaps they already have.
While, now, with this grand thought by John Stewart in our minds, we can see the glory in people risking their lives to save. But, how easy it is to give glory to the ones that destroy. And how seldom do we admire the leaders that hold back from war, that seek diplomacy, and offer the olive branch of peace. We like to see the rambo in our leaders, the tough guy attitude, the bring it on mentality, to lead us to commitment on the battlefield.
And yet, now, we are engaged in a battle against the unseen foe, a miniscule virus that kills with impunity. So, when we have leaders that call upon us to make the hard choices, to take those steps that protect us from this deadly foe we say, not me, not in my state, “I have my rights.” And the deadly foe becomes deadlier, the hospital ICUs fill up and even get offered to only the ones that have a chance of survival.
So, where are the brave ones with “buckets rebuilding” that save themselves and others with arms put forth for vaccines? For, this is how we battle the unseen enemy that kills with impunity, from the youngest to the oldest. May we step forth, with arms bared for the shot of life, and defeat this unseen enemy called Covid.
I learned about the terror attack on September 11 2001 when I turned on my TV set to watch a sitcom and saw the horrific live news images instead.
For much of my life, 2001 was a futuristic date as shown by 2001 – A Space Odyssey. When I was 34, 2001 became a reality and is now a historic date with September 11 2001 a particulary moving and tragic date in that historic year.
Honor those who served and those who gave their lives in serving. But put the kibosh on the idea that war is an acceptable means of conflict resolution. (Exception: this war on COVID.)
I’m conflicted about this quote because I am recently reminded of another. The mastermind of 9/11 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was quoted saying “we will win because Americans don’t realize… we do not need to defeat you militarily; we only need to fight long enough for you to defeat yourself by quitting.” The withdrawal from Afghanistan has made this evil man prophetic.
This morning I remembered most of all those people on flight 93, ordinary humans who banded together and gave their lives vowing that plane would not be used to kill more humans. I remembered the people at ground zero frantically working in the dust and toxic fumes, no masks, digging frantically searching for survivors. I wept that morning. Then I remembered the millions of Americans that will not take a free, safe vaccine even to save themselves let alone someone else. I remembered millions of Americans who can’t be bothered to wear a mask to protect others, and this morning I wept again.
Bush didn’t think so. He didn’t think America could win without blowing things up in Afghanistan and destroying things in Iraq, with the vague idea that this would make those countries look like Crawford, TX. The blowing things up and destruction continued long after he left office, yet keen observers might notice that neither country has exactly become the tolerant, democratic, pro-Western society that W hoped for.
But then, the first two words of the quote might be relevant.

It is always the fools and the cowards that resort to violence. True courage is talking to, and listening to, those with whom you disagree.
Wishing everyone peace and the patience to find it.

We should honor those who have done their heroic best, but we should never ignore what has happened since.
Alas, we have not “won”. We’re not yet even close.
We won’t have “won” until we have put an end to terror… or at least to organized terror.

These in the days when heaven was falling.
The hour when earth’s foundations fled.
Followed their mercenary calling.
Took their pay and are dead.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended.
They stood, and earth’s foundations stayed.
What God abandoned these defended
and saved the sum of things for pay.- A.E. Housman
