I hear that chalk a-squeakin’ / On that old chalk board / I would never be here / On my own accord / Cause I’m stuck in Folsom Grade School / Til I turn 13 / A sadder situation / I have never seen.

My chalkboard cursive always looked as if I was writing with my eyes closed and sneezing at the same time! I always hated “going up to the board.”

Do markers on white board make a sound? Maybe something squishy or slithery?

I guess the main advantage to white boards and markers is that there is no dust cloud boom from when a particularly impish student gives them a vigorous cleaning in the classroom. I got detention for that once. Enjoyed both.

I had students who could get a squeak from the white board markers.

When I first began teaching I was assigned to a classroom that had old-school, true slate chalkboards. Writing on them was a sensual delight. The chalk slid over the surface wonderfully. After that it was all new-fangled white boards. Messy? Man!

At least the chalkboards were extremely easy to clean. And you didn’t have to double check to see if the markers were the true dry erase ones.

That’s why it’s important to oil your chalk.
