    Billions? Isn’t it said that you can only see on a clear night about 7,000 stars with the unaided eye? (Assuming Galileo hasn’t invented the telescope yet in the kingdom of ID.)

    It’s generally accepted that this strip is set in the Middle Ages and this was supported by a strip from two or three years ago when the present day was described as being in the distant future. Assuming that it is Medieval, this was a time when people had some idea of the vastness of the universe but wrongly believed that the Earth was at the centre of the universe rather than a planet moving around a star.

    Originally the telescope was used to spot ships as they approached the harbor. Galileo aimed it at the heavens just for the halibut, and discovered four Jovian moons. But no halibut.
