In 1982 I went to college and got one ear pierced, just to p—- off my dad. In that year, in that state, that was rebellion! I can’t imagine what my 16yo daughter is going to come up with to shock me! BTW my earing hole closed a few years ago, to my disappointment.

Is there any significance to Mr. Butts pointing with his thumb at the number 32 on the chalk board?

I hear that Marine Recruiters have a special, super concentrated, sales course taught by Mr Butts. …just a rumor.

He’s trying to blow smoke up their … well, he’s blowing smoke for sure. I worked two summers on a tobacco farm in North Carolina. Tobacco is so toxic there is only one type of insect that can live on its leaves. We literally had to scrape the tar from the leaves off our jeans at night with a knife. Many Christians in the Tobacco Belt have been questioning how those of good faith can participate in a “drug” industry which addicts and can eventually kill so many.

At the time the strip was written, we boomers had just invented sex, and we were keeping it to ourselves rather than letting the kids in elementary school in on it.

Humphrey Bogart was famous for smoking. He died in agony of throat cancer at 57.

To the end,all his friends tried to pretend they “didn’t notice”;even when he weighed less than 100 pounds.
