We Mainers deeply resent that city in Oregon, especially in the age of internet searches. Even if you specify you are looking for something in Portland, Maine, at least a third of the results will be in the more famous Portland.
The story I always heard was, when they were naming the city in Oregon, one person wanted to name it after Boston, another wanted to name it after Portland (Maine)….they flipped a coin (or something like that) and Portland won. Btw, I was born in Portland Maine.
Interestingly, both Portland, Maine and Portland, Oregon are the largest cities in their respective states, but neither is the state capital. That’s the only such pairing to share a name.
Urbana Illinois, seat of Champaign County Illinois, is named after Urbana Ohio, seat of Champaign County Ohio. The University of Illinois is in Urbana, but the University of Urbana is in Ohio.
The leading cannabis dispensary in San Francisco is called “Urbana,” but I’m guessing that’s more a pun on “herb.”

This arc has kinda fizzled at this point. It’s like using a surfboard in a kiddy pool.

I’ve been to Portland Maine, it’s very nice. Old buildings turned into shops and condos, I could never afford to live there.

I’m sure Maine would rather everyone think of Oregon.
