So if Marcie’s mom knew Marcie couldn’t sew, why did she put her through the experience? Why not lend a hand, or even teach her?

I’d make some nitpicky comment about how this doesn’t really teach Patty a lesson about anything, but she doesn’t have a mom, her dad probably can’t afford to buy a skating dress (or she’d feel guilty to ask), and there’s the pressure of the competition itself. Just let it slide.

That’s as sweet as it gets. In the day when we hear nothing but people doing evil to other people, we should be reminded that there are people who do good things for others. Let’s all be like Marcie’s mom for a change.
