Wow, thank heaven’s for the artist’s explanation about what the first 3 panels meant. I could never have understood what the first 3 panels meant without that artist’s note!
Authorial intent is by no means irrelevant, just unenforceable; ultimately, of course, audience response is up to the audience. But if art is to be a form of communication as well as a form of expression, both ends need to make an effort to meet in the middle.
Reader’s Digest had a little paragraph or so about an artist who was 100 years old. “I don’t want anybody should break a head looking at my painting and asking what does it mean,” I recall him saying. “So I write down what it means and I put it in an envelope and tape it to the back of the canvas.”

Art is whatever you can get away with. $500,000 pile of metal balls near Edmonton, AB and $500,000 statue of dog poop in San José, CA.

Are statues, say of Confederate generals, a work of, let’s not say art, an artist?

In “Godel, Escher, Bach” there’s a little quiz asking you to differentiate between computer generated artspeak and quotes from human art critics.

Is this strip just a stab at the people who say the new art style sucks?
