Back in the ’40’s, before television, more large cities have multiple newspapers, New York City had 10 newspapers, not counting the Brooklyn Eagle and the Staten Island Advance (still being published). Each paper would have an exclusive contract that only that paper could carry a particular comic strip in their area. Legend has that The New York Journal American which carried all the popular King Feature strips mostly stayed in business because of it’s comic section.
Not hard to believe. We can get the news and sports out of mid air on a radio or TV or whatever. Good comics are in limited supply. Precious and few are they. Like memories of the best of better times.
Screwball comedy “How to Murder Your Wife” features Jack Lemmon as a wealthy, glamourous Manhattanite…newspaper cartoonist. So there’s a fantasy element as well.
