The birds that visit my feeder absolutely hate millet, to the point where they’ll toss it all over the ground to get to the “good stuff.” I quit buying it.
There is always a squirrel that can not believe the way to the feeder is blocked. They will climb up part way into the tube baffle before they finally realize it’s a dead-end. They will still spend time checking the feeder from all angles, looking for a way to reach the mother lode.
We had a feeder where the Jays would shovel out the seed looking for the choicest sunflower seeds. The small birds and squirrels would then scarf up the spilled seed on the snow pack.
Don’t put out millet—it’s the favorite food of house sparrows, an invasive species introduced from England in the 1800s that kills all the nesting parents and eggs of every songbird in whatever they consider their territory during breeding season and have helped push the bluebird near extinction. No millet, no house sparrows muscling in.
Dad had a bird feeder outside and he feed the birds everyday and when I moved into the apartment below him I like to sit and watch the birds at the feeder singing and fighting over the food but then the stray cat that he took in last winter has killed 2 birds and a couple of chipmunks that also come to eat seed on ground when Dad takes the cat outside for his walks, cat is on a leash, so Dad had to take the feeder down, makes me sad not to hear them sing everyday.

The provisions may be short for the entire lot. I guess, this group appears often to the Gumbos cute family.

For us, the deer were never a problem. But the cows got to be.

For the most part the outdoor creatures can fend for themselves unless there is a deep snow that stays on for awhile.
