So, the 1% might change their stripes if they were scared in the same way? Nah. Doubt they would take the time to notice. And if they did, they’d spend their last seconds trying to buy their way out of it.
Scrooge at least started out as a normal human but that quality was constantly eroded by circumstances until he had no other purpose than the accumulation of wealth. Note I said accumulation and not the spending thereof. Gold generates a lot of heat in the getting but very little in the keeping. Mostly just cold fear that everyone is trying to get it.
My wife bought me A Christmas Carol a few years ago. I read it every year and I also watch the movie (Alastair Sim version) while sipping single malt scotch. It’s a tradition I look forward to every year. And National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is also required watching during the Holiday Season.
Scrooge didn’t change because he was scared. He changed because he got reminded what a great boss his employer Mr. Fezziwig was, reminded how great it had been to HAVE a boss like that. Which made him notice for the first time that he, Scrooge, was not a great boss. Every single adaptation of the book has changed the ending in a way that keeps that truth from showing.

Unfortunately, the party of greed has made the “before” Ebenezer Scrooge their hero.

My pea brain simply cannot understand this strip. But I keep coming back in hopes that Jef dumbs one down enough for me to get it…
