I used to know a lady who bragged about taking down the decorations before sundown on Christmas day so there would be no sign of the holiday in her house.
I think it’s sad that people are in such a rush to take down Christmas decorations. We need color and lights to get us through the drab days of January and February.
My brother’s wife puts up a ton of Christmas decorations. Day after Christmas take them all down. I go with the Epiphany thing as a good excuse. Because of heavy snows one year, the outside ones came down in April!!
Several years ago the two DJs on a local radio station reminded listeners that a new county law required them to take down outdoor decorations by the end of March or be fined $50. The phones at the radio station started to light up, and also at the local police station. Everyone was afraid that they wouldn’t have time to comply before April 1ˢᵗ.
The joke was on the radio station because the police wanted to fine them for disrupting their phone system and office staff.
I have a friend of mine, with no children, who is ALL about Christmas. She puts the tree up and decorates her house inside and out the long weekend right after Thanksgiving. But then she takes it all down and puts it all away before New Year’s Eve.
…our tree goes up a day or two before the Dec 25 Christmas, and we keep it up until the day after Ukrainian Christmas Jan 7. As to outdoor lights, I always like them in trees, so as long as they don’t include any Santa’s, Elves or Grinches, they can stay up all year as far as I’m concerned :)…
Christmas Easter Halloween are known as Pagan holidays. We decorate to satisfy ourselves. Jesus wasn’t even born in December, there was no December. Yet we celebrate and are nice to each other a few days a years. Sigh
I always try to take mine down the day after three kings day. My dad said it was bad luck to take them down before New year’s and my mother in law says its, well, lazy not to get them down before new years…
I enjoy my large artificial tree. Last year was so lousy because of Covid I said screw tradition and I kept my decorations up and lit until mid February. I loved looking at the lights. With this new round of Covid I’m thinking I may do a repeat.
Myfather’s family are Ukrainian Orthodox. They celebrate Advent as “Lesser Lent,” a time to prepare hearts and souls for the birth of Jesus, the Son of God. Lent, the time before Easter, is known as the “Greater Lent,” a time to prepare hearts and souls for the death AND resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Americans are weird. They put up their Christmas decorations in November and take them down before the Epiphany.

Hanging stockings up when there are no young children in the house seems weird to me.

Mom will keep her Charles Dickens Village decorations up all winter to get through the dull, cold boredom of January, February, and March.

Our tree goes up after Thanksgiving, gets fresh growth in February, and goes down in early March when it’s dropping needles.
