We only had to take 2 years of PE in high school but it was compulsory every year in elementary and middle school. Everyone but the competitive jocks hated the “Presidential Physical Fitness” test where everyone had to run 600 yards, run a 50 sprint, do the shuttle run, do timed sit ups, pull ups and throw a softball as hard and as far as you can. The objective: not be the worst in class at any activity (like do not be the kid who got nada on the pull ups). I remember the absence rate on certain days of the test was high. This was a yearly thing. In high school you could opt out of PE if you were in the marching band, ROTC, cheerleading or in certain sports (swimming, baseball, cross country, tennis etc) where we would practice/drill in the last period of the day (often it extended well after school) and it counted toward the PE requirement. So this strip rings true, of all the trials and tribulations of middle/high school; PE was one a lot kids put on the top of their hate list.
When I was in college, It seemed every semester I had one situation where I had to run a mile across campus to get from one class to the next. Plus at least a mile from the student parking lots to the main campus. I figured I walked a good 3-5 miles a day.
