Learning basic arithmetic means you just need a pencil and paper. They aren’t very expensive. They don’t yet know that their phones will have very nice calculators in them eventually. If they are worried about the cost of a couple of batteries, they need to adjust their lifestyle, maybe their housing. This budget stuff is overdone, in my opinion. How can Frank have no idea what batteries cost?
I bought a K-Mart solar powered scientific calculator around 1981 or 1982. The last time I checked, it was still functional. Nowadays, every cellphone has one. (If you don’t already know, turn it sideways and then open the calculator app. The scientific form will show.)
