No, it’s actually when someone trains their dog without realizing what lesson they’re giving – such as teaching a dog that it’s OK not to sit when you tell it to sit over and over.
I’ve come to the realization that my dog often wants to go out for the sole purpose of getting a treat when he returns. He also expects a treat when he finishes his supper……..he simply stands next to the refrigerator and waits. My X trained him…not me.
This so reminds me of Data of STNG trying to train his cat, Spot. He couldn’t get Spot to do anything he wanted her to do, but she got him to do just about everything. Jordy remarked, “Well, I don’t know about Spot’s training, but your’s is coming along very well.”
We had two cats and we gave them treats when they came back inside. They constantly sat at the back door meowing to go out and then scratching the door to come back in.
a couple of years ago i was at the delaware shore. two women were trying to get their golden retriever to fetch a ball. they’d throw it into the surf but it was april and the water was cold. he was having no part of it forcing the women to wade in to get it. throw it down the beach-he got it, throw it into the water, he just sat down. after an hour or so he had the women perfectly trained to fetch his ball out of the sea.
Rode a horse quite a bit growing up on the farm. We were not allowed to ride with a saddle, “too dangerous, might get dragged” and the saddle was too heavy for me anyway. So, I fell off a lot. We weren’t allowed to tie the reins either so when the reins fell our well-trained cow horse would stop and look at me lying on the ground. Looked to me like she was rolling her eyes.
My cat is still trying to train me. After years, I still don’t seem to get it. I keep asking if she wants to go in or out. Any fool can see she wants the door left open. :)
Yah. Doggos wanted to go for walkies. At 4:47 am. In -6ºC with snow on the ground. Easier to clean up outside than inside. Cats just used the Litter Bot.
You know how neglected dogs bark to pester people to give them some attention, even if it’s only to bark back at them, “Quiet!”…there’s an ad (Scott paper goods) on this page that keeps jumping out until I close it, then knows I’m here and starts again. I need to steel myself and ignore it….

For the longest time I have believed “They train us, we do not train them.”

Animal survival training includes learning how to rig the situation to one’s advantage. Watch, listen, adapt. Generations of it. It’s in the genes.

Dogs, kids, and horses, … you gotta be smarter than the beast to train it! ( I was good with 2 out of 3! )

What strange fiction is this? A couple reading ?! Either the TV would be on, or they’d be online.

Good, but I think the cats’ method of scratching at the door is even more effective because they get on your nerves

Heavens, what is that thing the man is reading? If it is meant to be a newspaper, he is only about 25 years out of date.
