When I’m playing the game it isn’t a goal for a goal, but a goal for a save. (Favoring my team.)

That’s typical of another sport. While in England 70 years back I noticed that, when winning rugby players smiled for the camera, most had no front uppers. Said that’s some rough sport. An English friend laughed and told me most players deliberately had their teeth removed by a dentist to avoid the trauma of losing them during play. Seems head butting and the occasional roundhouse right were common techniques for gaining or retaining possession. Between that and seeming to love muddy fields better than dry, I found rugby a very interesting form of a national sport.

With helmets and eye shields and mouth guards from the NHL and down those days are over. The NHL rules committee is considering that any player who has removed their helmet on the ice for purposes of fighting to be given at minimum a five minute penalty for fighting.

I toured with an international theatre company in Europe for some years, and was once on a touring unit with a young Englishman who avidly followed soccer/football. He was wondering why we never had the reports of hooliganism at our games that they found common at theirs. Then he saw the US men’s hockey team in the Olympics that year. “That’s why you don’t have hooligan problems at football matches. You send all your yobs out to play ice hockey!”
