Plastics are wonderful! So say the plastic bearing surfaces in my replacement knee. Look around you at all the plastic stuff. We can’t do without it or the oil that it comes from.
We do need to be careful with disposal. Cities that ship garbage out by barge have a great deal of responsibility for the Great Pacific garbage patch and its north Atlantic cousin. I have high hopes for Eastman Chemical’s molecular recycling research.
I would rather go after the people who throw their trash in parks, beaches, and other public locations. My wife and I pick up trash every day that inconsiderate people leave on the sidewalks and parks during our walks. Number one trash today is masks. Easily surpass any plastic bags and straws that we used to see.
A ship loaded up with recyclables from a US city to take to ch1n4 for processing. Then the same ship stopped in a large South American city to load up with recyclables to take to ch1n4 for processing. Gee, what happened to the first load?
Enjoying the frequent comments in this strip on what humans are doing to damage and destroy the innocent lives we share the Earth with. Will we ever learn?
Somehow, drycurt, I’m not following this. Are you saying the first load didn’t make it to China and was instead dumped into the ocean? I cannot truly answer your question but perhaps the US shipment only partially filled the ship, which then proceeded to South America to finish loading it up. Just a guess.
Plastics, in general, aren’t the problem. Yes, there are places where we can change from plastic to paper (looking at you detergent companies. I have washing detergent in sheet form stored in a cardboard box). It is the irresponsible disposing of plastics that is the biggest problem.

Aw this makes me sad. :( I don’t live near the ocean, is it really that bad?

Like I said here before, stop throwing trash in the oceans or other bodies of water. That’s just common sense.

A shark blowing a raspberry (or appearing to, in the last panel) … never thought I’d see the day. Only in Overboard, folks!
Good Evening, Crew.
