Friend and I used a Cushman motor scooter for fun rides. Guy at the gas station grumped when we filled the 1.5 gallon tank and had to add pennies to get the price. He didn’t realize we were just a year or two from driving s0-called street rods and eating up the gas.
I remember when gas pumps had mechanical metering and couldn’t handle prices more than 49.9 cents/gallon. When prices exceeded that, the pump was set to 1/2 price/gallon, and you paid twice the indicated amount.
Why is gasoline measured in 1/1,000 of a gallon? Who can squeeze off 1/1,000 of a gallon.
I did the math. 1/1,000 of a gallon is slightly less than a teaspoon. For the average SUV, that will get you 73 feet – enough to reach the next gas pump.
Adjusted for inflation, gas prices were about the same from 1978 to 2001. In 2021 dollars, gas in 1978 was about $3.30. It’s decreased slightly over the decades, to being about $3.13 in 2021.
Convert to metric and you will have the litres go faster than the $$$. Make you feel better too about getting a whopping 75L instead of a measly 20 gallons
Im old enough to remember when you didn’t have to pump your own gas. A time when several station employees would run out, check your tires, oil and wash your windows along with pumping gas.
Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away, I was in college and had a VW Beetle. Ten gallon tank. Dead empty, I could fill it for $1.70 in a little town in Texas. Problem was, I didn’t have $1.70.
$1.25hr. At the Pontiac dealer/Gulf fuel and oil. Recent graduate from Trade school, certified Auto mechanic;gas pumper,Etc. Had a ’66 Ford Mustang Shelby 350. Was one vehicle that I owned at that time. ’64 Pontiac GTO custom, was another. Peace.
He doesn’t look that old. A little googling tells me that gas prices first went over a dollar in 1980, so he’d have to be at least in his late 50s to remember paying less than a dollar a gallon. (I’m assuming you wouldn’t remember gas prices if you weren’t old enough to be buying gas.)
I remember a time when there were decent jobs in America and CEOs made 25 times what the Average employee made instead of 350 times as much. Good bye democracy, hello fascism.

In high school and early college, I only kept $2 with me. That would buy a lunch, or gas for a week.

It was .25 when I started driving and I could rarely afford to fill the tank all the way.

Well, we could always switch to European system and show liters (we could do quarts) instead of gallons. Then you might achieve parity.

Briefly in 2020 the litres moved faster than the dollars again here. (Australia). Briefly in March 2022 we got over $2/litre.
