You can always find something to praise. “Hey, I love your use of color.” “You know, you have a real talent.” “I really admire the way you bring a personality to life.” “Your anger really shows.” or the old standby, “I see an early Grandma Moses.”
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Arlo took a job as an “artist’s model” and posed nude in Janis’s Art class? I’m sure Janis, and probably Arlo as well, would turn red as a beet during that class.
Conté, also known as Conté sticks or Conté crayons, are a drawing medium composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a clay base, square in cross-section.Wikipedia (Figured I wasn’t the only one that didn’t know what they were)
I had a girlfriend who gave me her poems to read. I honestly could not make head nor tails of them; they made just as much sense to me as if I were reading them backwards. I helpfully suggested certain possible meanings to the obscure metaphors, which just made her even more furious, and she did much the same thing as Janis is doing in today’s strip.
So, did Arlo become a graphics artist or (God forbid) a cartoonist? Just kidding, wish I could draw like these guys but an art teacher told my mom when I was 5 that he’d never had a student with less talent. Did become an very good drafter and used it when I did environmental work.
She’s working in Conte crayons——not that easy! And she’s trying to learn and develop her style even as she learns the basics. And if she loves drawing she will have already been practicing a lot just for fun. You don’t have to create “great art” in order to draw well and enjoy it. Most great art happens while the artist is experimenting and asking what if I did this instead of that?
I think she was so anxious to get away from Arlo that she didn’t even give him a chance to remind him she needed to pay for her purchase. He likes her so much instead of chasing her down he decides to pay for them himself.

Now Arlo has to have a leap in faith with Janis. Will she pay up? How will she pay up. Stay tuned for the next installment Monday.

Arlo’s mistake was in asking her to see her work in the first place. He should have planned ahead, for the eventuality.
