Your eyes must be worse that your taste buds Earl. If you can’t see the difference between tapioca pudding and mashed taters.

I never had good taste buds, so I’m not a picky eater (can’t tell the difference between pork and beef, for instance).

I’ve been forbidden to eat things containing calcium until the current course of antibiotics is done. It’s been hellish difficult since both Spouse and I are cheese people… and there’s dairy in all sorts of things like mashed potatoes and cornbread. Point of the story in this case: We had ham and mashed potatoes for Easter dinner. The potatoes were made using chicken stock instead of half and half. It was EXCELLENT! We’ll probably be doing that in the future, at least some of the time!

Flashing back now to the time I ordered a salad with my steak and asked for blue cheese dressing. When it arrived the first bite was a lot tangier than blue cheese usually gets. With the second bite I realized it wasn’t blue cheese, and with the third I was able to identify it.

They had put creamy horseradish on the salad instead of blue cheese.

Next time the waiter passed the table I pointed it out to him but told him not to get anyone in trouble because it was pretty good, and suggested that maybe they start offering horseradish as an additional dressing option.

(Moral of the story: just because it doesn’t taste like it’s supposed to doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.)

Opal has found a way to take Earl’s failing tastebuds personally. I knew that— if she just tried hard enough— she could do it!

If my mom was Opal, you’d know it wasn’t tapioca if it wasn’t topped with a dollop of currant jelly.

I know it has a bad rep, but I always liked homemade tapioca. Then I started replacing the vanilla with almond extract and it’s even better!
